. Bellydancing Terminology to Prepare you for your LessonHere are some terms that you will hear when you experience the one-hour lesson. You may like to print this page off and get to know some of these terms before you attend the event.

ARMS Hand twirl - twirling the hand at the wrist in a small circle.Wrist curl - curling hand at the wrist Elbow curl - curling the arm at the elbow Peaceful hands - fingers pointing up, hands put together in prayer position. Vessel - a turned over "peaceful hands", fingers facing the floor. Unfolding - unfolding hands from whatever position they occupied. |
Turning over - turning hands over from whatever position they occupied.Flick fingers - flicking all fingers in rhythm Steeple - hands meet together above the head. Snaking the steeple - A steeple formation is snaked down in front of the face. Crossing up - from below the hips, cross arms at wrist, keeping elbows high, raise above your head.Crossing down - from above the head, cross hands at wrist, to drag the energy down. Arm arcs - both hands meet at the back or front then open out in unison. Snake arms - arms pretend to be snakes, arms are led by the elbow, snaking through alternatively. Serpentine arms - Two arms entwining alternately, going up or down, hands become the snakes head using a twirl or wave. Cobra coils - circle hand above head, coming down through a shoulder roll with a leading elbow curl, followed by a wrist curl. Sliding under the chin - one parallel hand/arm slides from shoulder to shoulder under the chin, elbows high. Slinking back - a cobra slinks above and over the head, over the shoulder and through a Spanish frame. Framing arms - arms frame the body like a diamond. A good starting position.Spanish frame - framing arm taken past the hips, as in Spanish dancing. Spanish crown - arms go above the head like a steeple, but hands turn and the backs of the wrists touch. Crescent - one arm is above the head while the other is around hip area. Parallel hands / arms- one hand is folded over the other, placed under the chin with elbows high at shoulder level. Windmill arms - opening arms from a shoulder roll. Creating a windmill motion. Guiding hand - a hand that leads or guides. Leading arm or shoulder - an arm or shoulder that leads. Temple pose - arm are extended over the head with hand stretched outwards, palms facing upwards. Temple buff - fingers touch the temple area of your head while the other arm extends to the front or side (shoulder height). Either in a stationary position or alternating. Egyptian arms - L shaped - one arm is above the head & other is out at shoulder height. SHOULDERS Shoulder roll - circling the shoulders alternately or one sided in � time, single or double time.Shoulder press - pressing your shoulders forward alternately. Shoulder accenting - accenting a beat using a shoulder press - � time (very slow), single time (slow) or double time. Shoulder shimmies - are shoulder press in single time (slow) , double time (medium) or full time (fast). Double time - (medium), consisting of 2 movements to a single time beat. Full time - (fast), Shimmies in full time, 4 movement to a single time beat. Fast time - (very fast), vibrating shimmies, 6 to 8 movements to a single time beat. RIBS Rib rotation - rotating the ribs on a horizontal levelRib lift - lifting the rib cage Rib rolls - rolling the rib lift movement. Side ribs - taking ribs to the side. You can extend side ribs with a Turkish shoulder or you can extent to the extreme. Rib eights - creating a figure eight with your ribs. Vertical rib circle Horizontal rib circle Rounding your back
HIPS Side hips (in � time, � time, single time, double time, � time & full time shimmies).Side hips sharp - movements are sharp & accurate. Hip flick - hip lift with a sharp flick to the side or up. Hip lifts - lift heel to lift hip. The emphasis is on the lift & dropping is incidental. Hip drops - lift heel to lift the hip up, then drop. The emphasis is on the drop & the lift is incidental, 2 counts, 4 counts, 3 counts or � time. Hip bounces - drops that are small & bouncy, usually in double time or full time. Hip points - hip drops, as if following points on a compass, either in 3, 4, 8, 16 counts. 2's - two side hip movements to each side. 3's - 3 side hips to one side. 4's - four side hips to one side. � time - you move 3 out of 4 beats. Hips descending - hip drops descending, down stairs. Hips accenting - coming up the stairs from descending. Hip rotation - rotating the hips on a horizontal level. Hip twist - rotating one hip at a time. Egyptian drops - combining small & large hip drops to the beat/ rhythm as required.Hip sit - hip drop into a sitting position, usually emphasizing a hold or accenting a rhythm. Egyptian Walk - is basically full time shimmies with a single time walk. Walk - means the action of a walk, walking forwards putting one foot in front of the other. This can also be accomplished backwards, sideways or around. Side Shimmies - full time side hips, either earthed feet or raised heels. Vibrating Shimmies - starts with a peddling your knees motion, take medium/ fast into thighs, creating a vibrating shimmy in full or fast time which vibrates your whole body (as if you are freezing). Pelvic rock - a basic pelvic floor exercise, to tone your pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic tilt - a pelvic floor exercise turned into a danceable tilting of the pelvis & hips. Tilting hips - tilting your hips back & forth as in a pelvic tilt. Pelvic circles - combining a pelvic tilt with a hip circle horizontal. Pelvic scoops - scooping in an upward movement with your pelvis. Hip circles horizontal - a circular movement with both hips, not using the pelvic tilt. Hip circle vertical - one hip only, using the hip lift to circle forward, down & up, create a complete one hipped circle. Hip loop - is one loop of the outside or inside eights. FIGURE EIGHTS Inside eights - pretend you are drawing a figure eight with each hip inwards towards your tummy. A very sensuous & expressive movement.Outside eights - pretend you are drawing a figure outwards towards your back side. Over eights (Maya) - lifting hip to take hip out than loop slightly under. Or lift hip & vertically form a loop. Repeat on other side. An absolutely fabulous movement to untighten hips & a fabulous movement to watch. Under eights (sway)- drop hip to go under, than out & lift over towards your navel (forming a vertical loop that rolls towards your belly button. Alternate hips to create a swaying movement). Again this will give more freedom & flexibility to your hips. The Subtle Egyptian Eights - Often these movement are subtle & small. When they appear larger they than become a hip loop our or in with occasional larger emphasis. Egyptian shallow eights - (� pelvic circles)- in or out - from your pelvis area start to loop in (or out) forming a � circle (or � loop). As a beginner think of it as a � of a pelvic circle, This will make more sense to you, as often the pelvic circle follows. As an advanced student you can view it as a � of an eight. Egyptian eight - in or out - from your pelvic area complete a full loop, than do the same with the other hip thus forming a figure eight.
